The No. 20 Texas Longhorns are back at the Moody Center on Saturday for the third game of a four-game homestand that also represents the close of the non-conference season as the Longhorns host the UT Arlington Mavericks on Saturday.
Texas is coming off an impressive 72-37 win over UNC Greensboro on Friday, leading from the start to the finish for the third time in the last four games. Junior guard Tyrese Hunter paced the Longhorns with a season-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while tying his season high with seven assists. Senior forward Kaden Shedrick and senior guard Max Abmas also scored in double digits and sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell blocked four shots, tying his career high.
And despite an up-and-down start to the season on defense, Texas held Greensboro to a season low in points, 21 below the previous low, 29.8-percent shooting, including 3-of-9 shooting from three (15.8 percent). The Spartans only recorded six assists and committed 16 turnovers.
The Longhorns blew the game open in the second half with a 21-3 run in 8:17 to0 take a 32-point lead that reached as high as 38 and never dropped below 30.
UTA enters the game at 6-6 this season ranked No. 181 nationally in KenPom.com’s adjusted efficiency metric with the No. 195 offense and the No. 181 defense. All six wins have come when scoring more than 70 points. In two previous game against Power Five opponents, UTA lot to No. 3 Arizona 101-56 and fell 77-66 to Texas Tech. Southeast Missouri transfer guard Phillip Russell leads the Mavericks in scoring at 17.7 points per game while forward Dwayne Koroma shoots 57.5 percent from the floor.
