A visit weekend for midyear enrollees from the NCAA transfer portal is beginning to materialize for the Texas Longhorns with a report from Bobby Burton that head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are expected to host Liberty Flames transfer wide receiver CJ Daniels and Houston Cougars transfer defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell.
Both players also have plans to visit Oregon with Auburn expected to get Daniels on campus, as well.
A Georgia product who was ranked as a consensus three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, Daniels was a big-play threat for the Flames throughout his career, averaging 20 yard per catch as a freshman, 17.0 yards per catch as a sophomore, and 19.4 yards per catch as a senior in a huge season that saw the 6’2, 200-pounder record 55 catchers for 1,067 yard and 10 touchdowns. In the vertical passing game for Liberty, Daniels had an average depth of target of 15.9 yards and flashed impressive ball skills by coming down with 7-of-9 contested catches.
With wide receiver AD Mitchell still expected to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft, Daniels would provide Texas another outside receiving threat capable of taking the top off the defense, an area where Houston transfer Matthew Golden has not yet excelled in his college career.
Caldwell was an offensive lineman in high school in South Carolina who spent time at Hutchinson CC and Independence CC before landing at Houston in 2022. The 6’1, 325-pounder showed promise in 2022 with 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks before receiving second-team All-Big 12 recognition this year after emerging as one of the conference’s best defensive tackles, recording 27 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. A strong run defender who graded at 82.8 by PFF in 2023, Caldwell also added eight hurries and 18 defensive stops.
The departures of T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy created a need for Texas in the transfer portal at the defensive tackle position and Caldwell seemed like a potential fit after leaving Houston in mid-December, but was slow to emerge as an actual target for the Longhorns.
Texas signed Golden and Clemson transfer safety Andrew Mukuba from the portal last month.
