After a week of Lane Kiffin rumors, the Houston Cougars made the smart choice and hired former Texas Longhorns quarterback Major Applewhite as head coach.
Applewhite is replacing Tom Herman, now the head coach of Texas, and both men have deep ties to both programs. Applewhite set numerous passing records as the QB in Austin between 1998 and 2001.
One of his most memorable games was a comeback win over Oklahoma in 1999. Texas trailed 17-0 before winning 38-28.
Reminisce here:
Applewhite later returned for a spell on the Texas coaching staff. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Houston under Herman, and now gets the chance to lead his own program.
