Attrition

There's going to be some -- there are probably two or three spots left in the 2014 class for players like Zaycoven Henderson, Solomon Thomas, Jamal Adams, Nick Watkins, and Edwin Freeman, the legitimate targets still left on the board.

Taking three would put the Longhorns 10 scholarships over the limit for next season, above the expected attrition level for a team. And that's after losing guys with multiple seasons of eligibility before the season like Connor Brewer and Cayleb Jones.

Here's the breakdown of attrition candidates:

Quarterback -- None.

Running back -- Maybe Chet Moss, but he seems content occupying his scholarship and playing on special teams. Hard to see him leaving on his own.

Wide receiver -- None. Watch this position after the influx of 2014 prospects come in, though.

Tight ends -- Miles Onyegbule hasn't contributed yet and doesn't appear likely to do so, but he may also be happy occupying a scholarship. Caleb Bluiett has changed positions several times already, typically a sign that someone could be on the way out. However, he has a chance to contribute in 2015 if he sticks around.

Offensive line -- It would be surprising to see Garrett Greenlea finish his career at Texas on a football scholarship after sitting out this year for a medical redshirt.

Defensive line -- Marcus Hutchins and Paul Boyette are both buried on the defensive tackle depth chart.

Linebackers -- This is the position where the most attrition could occur, because Aaron Benson will be a senior next year having never gotten on the field and both Tevin Jackson and Kendall Thompson have fallen out of the rotation and look like busts at this time.

Defensive backs -- None stand out.

Texas could also lose some commits in the 2014 class if the coaching staff changes, with the most likely candidates at this time being Kevin Shorter and Jermaine Roberts. And there's also the high likelihood that some unexpected players currently on the roster end up out of the program by next fall and those tend to be the most painful because that attrition isn't from the bottom of the depth chart.

Biggest needs

Looking at the overall offensive line numbers doesn't tell the whole tale, as the group will be heavily made up of offensive guards over the next several years and Greenlea isn't likely to ever contribute. Right now, going after a junior college offensive tackle isn't heavily in the discussion, in part because of limited numbers in the class, though neither Donald Hawkins or Desmond Harrison were on the radar at this time in previous years, either.

There's also only one offer out to another 2015 tackle, Rockwall's Trevor Elbert, who will likely end up in the SEC. The Horns need to continue scouring the state for another tackle in that class or end up having to find a junior college player some time next fall in that class, the type of solution that is effective, but short term.

The other major need is at tight end. The move of Bluiett back to the position ensures that Texas will have a player there in 2016 at the current rate, but deciding not to offer any in-state prep players in 2014 puts more pressure on the 2015 class to find someone there, an area in which Texas has struggled mightily in recent years -- the Horns don't have a player who played the position in high school on the roster right now besides Daniels at times and Swaim when he wasn't recruited.

Depending on what happens in the next several weeks, the Horns may also need to pursue a junior college or transfer quarterback. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of strong options available.
