Texas injury updates: Daje Johnson out, David Ash's status still unknown

The Horns may be without two key offensive players on Saturday.

At his Monday press conference in preparation for Ole Miss, Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown said that sophomore wide receiver/running back Daje Johnson will be out this week, but there is still no more word on junior starting quarterback David Ash.

Ash left the game with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter against BYU and suffered head and shoulder injuries. He will be evaluated and monitored throughout the rest of the week to determine his availability, but did not practice on Sunday evening.

Senior quarterback Case McCoy would be the starter if Ash is out, while Brown seemingly didn't rule out true freshman Tyrone Swoopes playing. He's been running the scout team as the only other true quarterback on the roster at this time.

Johnson's loss is a significant one, as he had nearly 130 rushing yards in the opener against New Mexico State and carried the football to start both games, clearly indicating how important the Plfugerville Hendrickson product is to the awesome now in the estimation of play caller Major Applewhite.

Where does the explosiveness come from in the offense? Well, senior wide receiver Mike Davis had the two big plays through the air in the passing game and sophomore running back Johnathan Gray was able to break off a long run later in the game.
