Charlie Strong confirms transfer of redshirt freshman offensive guard Rami Hammad

Several days of reports and speculation about the future of redshirt freshman offensive guard Rami Hammad with the Texas Longhorns program came to an end Thursday when head coach Charlie Strong confirmed that Hammad has left the program.

A report from Orangebloods on Sunday originally broke the news that Hammad intended to transfer, with several confirmations coming in during the subsequent hours.

There had been persistent rumors that Hammad and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Wickline were clashing and the former four-star prospect and national top-10 offensive guard failed to seriously dent the guard rotation in the spring with junior Taylor Doyle starting opposite junior Sedrick Flowers during the Orange-White game.

During fall camp, sophomore Kent Perkins has been working at the other guard slot with little positive buzz accompanying Hammad.

A former Oklahoma State and Baylor commit, Hammad is a 6'5, 320-pounder who saw his stock take off late in the recruiting process in the 2013 class, based in large part upon a breakout performance at the Semper Fi All-American game.

The Irving product was part of the heralded 2013 offensive line class that also included junior college transfer Desmond Harrison, Under Armour All-American Darius James, US Army All-American Jake Raulerson, and Perkins, who also played in the US Army All-American game.

At the time the five prospects signed, former head coach Mack Brown called it his best offensive line recruiting class during his tenure in Austin.

But it seems that the tale of Hammad at Texas was one of unfulfilled potential.
