Add three more Texas Longhorns to the updated injury list as running backs Chris Warren III and Tristian Houston and center Zach Shackelford suffered various injuries during Saturday’s practice, according to multiple reports.
Per Texas, RB Tristian Houston (ankle), C Zach Shackelford (ankle) and RB Chris Warren (hamstring) will all miss time after being hurt Sat.— Brian Davis (@BDavisAAS) March 25, 2017
It’s unclear how significant these injuries are at this time, but all three can prove problematic if they call for extended time on the sidelines.
According to reports, all three injuries were sustained during Saturday’s scrimmage — one that was celebrated as a Fan Appreciation Day.
The most concerning of the trio, at least initially, appears to be Warren, who is widely expected to cement his role as the Longhorns feature back in 2017, but has battled injuries throughout his young career, including a knee injury that sidelined him for eight games last season.
With Warren and Houston out, the Longhorns running back corps is now spread thin with very little experience in the backfield. This should provide an opportunity for additional reps for guys like Kyle Porter, Kirk Johnson and early Enrollee Toneil Carter. Porter and Johnson are currently the ‘Horns second and third string running backs, respectively.
In Shackelford’s absence, expect someone like junior Terrell Cuney to step up and take first-team reps at center.
Additionally, redshirt senior offensive tackle Brandon Hodges will miss some time to focus on academics, according to a report from Jeff Howe of Horns247.
Warren, Shackelford and Houston now join senior safety Jason Hall and senior punter Michael Dickson on the injury list. Hall and Dickson are suffering from hamstring injuries.
