For the third time in as many days, a Texas Longhorns walk-on has earned and been awarded with a scholarship.
After senior cornerback Jarmarquis Durst and senior wide receiver Phillip Moeller were presented with scholarships on Thursday and Friday, respectively, Saturday saw the Longhorns latest scholarship go out to senior offensive lineman Austin Allsup.
“As a walk-on you always hope that your work goes recognized. You always kind of hope this day comes, but you never really expect it,” a teary-eyed Allsup said. “I just... I can’t believe this happened. I love each one of y’all, I love this coaching staff more than anything. Y’all are all my family. Let’s go get ‘em this year, boys.”

A Lorena product, Allsup joined the Texas program as a walk-on in 2016, but didn’t see the field throughout Charlie Strong’s final season on the Forty Acres. That changed as a junior, as Allsup made his first career appearance last season during the Longhorns 56-0 Week 2 win over San Jose State. Allsup later played in the Longhorns 38-7 road win over Baylor, and then again during a 42-27 win over Kansas.
Aside from his on-field efforts, which have now helped make his a scholarship member of the Texas football team, Allsup is also a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, with honors coming in spring 2017, fall 2017, and spring 2018.
Allsup is majoring in architectural engineering.
