Texas Longhorns safety Caden Sterns received the second of what will likely be many preseason honors on Monday as he was named to the Bednarik Award watch list.
The Bednarik Award is given out annually by the Maxwell Foundation to honor the nation’s top defensive player.

As a true freshman, Sterns pieced together an incredible campaign and for his trouble, was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, as well as honored as a member of the All-Big 12 team. He became the first Texas freshman in a decade to start the first 13 games of his career, grabbing a team-high four interceptions, as well as 62 tackles and three tackles for loss.
Sterns was already named as a member of the preseason All-Big 12 team and will likely receive many similar honors as the season rapidly approaches.
If Sterns can build on the success from his freshman campaign and win this prestigious award, he would become the first player in school history and just the third Big 12 player ever to win the award.
