Texas walk-on RB Mason Ramirez placed on scholarship

The Texas Longhorns running back room now includes another scholarship option.

Mason Ramirez is a walk-on no more.

After recently transitioning from safety to running back to help accommodate for the lack of healthy depth at the position, Ramirez has already proven valuable — and productive — for the Texas Longhorns throughout fall camp.

The Texas staff made that value quite clear.

While evaluating film from Texas’ recent scrimmage, offensive coordinator Tim Beck dubbed Martinez as the Player of the Game, highlighting a breakaway touchdown run before cutting away to a breaking news slide: Mason Ramirez you’re on scholarship.”

“Growing up, I would have given anything for one day in this room,” Martinez said. “Running down that field one day with my state on my chest and my family on my back, I looked at my parents and said we did it.”

“He’s doing a good job,” Tom Herman recently said of Ramirez. “He’s doing a really good job.”

A senior from the Austin area, Ramirez joined the Longhorns program as a walk-on this spring.
