The spot for Johnson opened up when the Panthers made the Super Bowl, taking linebacker and Pro Bowl selection Luke Kuechly with them.
It's the fourth Pro Bowl appearance for the 33-year-old Johnson, who played at Texas from 2001 to 2004. He played in a total of 50 games during his four years with the Longhorns and was drafted 15th overall by the Chiefs, where he has spent his entire NFL career.
