The Texas Longhorns picked up a commitment from one New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine prospect in the last week and could pick up another this weekend from cornerback Jermaine Roberts, who arrived in Austin on Friday afternoon.
Roberts' teammate Courtney Garnett committed last Sunday, but is not listed as among the current 2014 pledges for the Longhorns in some places because he has to take the ACT test this weekend and bring back a solid score to make his commitment officially official.
As for Roberts, the 5-9, 175-pound playmaking cornerback visited Ole Miss last weekend and currently has Texas in his top two. In fact, 247Sports has Texas as the leader on his profile, a revelation that apparently became public several days ago.
A month ago, a visit to Alabama had knocked Texas from that position on the same day that he told Hookem.com the 'Horns were out in front, but it seems that the Tide have now fallen behind in his recruitment.
The Longhorns have yet to land a defensive back prospect in the 2014 class and while they are in strong position with several, including Lewisville Hebron's Jamal Adams, Houston Lamar's John Bonney, and Brenham's Darrion Johnson, making the first addition to the class in the secondary would be a major step forward, even if it doesn't change the narrative of Texas struggling to secure commitments from the top defensive backs in the state.
With the 'Horns out in front, don't be surprised if Roberts shuts things down in favor of Texas while in Austin.
