Texas Longhorns weekend recruiting recap

The Texas Longhorns hosted several commits looking to firm up their pledges after getting the know the new coaching staff better, while one prospect committed elsewhere took an official visit, and a big-time four-star cornerback made his way to Austin.

Orangebloods reported on Sunday afternoon that four-star safety commit John Bonney told another prospect committed to the Horns that he will stick with the Longhorns after visiting Auburn and then Baylor in consecutive weeks.

After missing out on so many talented in-state prospects at defensive back in the 2014 cycle, keeping Bonney was of paramount importance, especially with an open spot at safety with the graduation of longtime starter Adrian Phillips.

The other committed recruit in town on an important visit was Abilene Cooper wide receiver Lorenzo Joe, the lifelong Texas fan who had visited TCU last weekend and was waiting to be sold on the new offense in Austin under Joe Wickline.

That apparently happened, perhaps with an assist from Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard, who was also in town helping to recruit, as Joe on Sunday afternoon tweeted out his excitement to sign with Texas on Wednesday.

The official visitor in attendance was Houston Cypress Creek offensive tackle Elijah Rodriguez. The current Colorado commit is expected to make his decision between the two schools on Monday evening, according to multiple reports. Rivals is now reporting an offer for Rodriguez, as expected, and the consensus remains that he will choose Texas, the school at which his grandfather played under Darrell K Royal.

An unexpected visitor also showed up on campus -- Oregon commit Arrion Springs, the immensely talented and athletic four-star cornerback from San Antonio Roosevelt. Strong work from former defensive backs coach Duane Akina helped the Horns enter Springs' recruitment after he grew up having a rather strong dislike for Texas, but it wasn't enough to keep him from committing to the Ducks last summer.

At this point, the expectation is that Springs remains committed to Oregon and signs with the Ducks on Wednesday.

In terms of bad news from the weekend, there was some -- Keller defensive end Sione Teuhema took his second visit in as many weeks, traveling to LSU after tripping to Oklahoma State last weekend. And while the visit to Stillwater wasn't considered a big deal because Teuhema was not accompanied by his five-star younger brother, Maea, the 2015 offensive lineman committed to Texas, the LSU visit was a big deal because Maea went along as well.

Not only that, but the Tigers were also serious contenders for the services of the two brothers when they committed to the Longhorns last spring.

The positive is that there are not currently any predictions for Sione to flip to LSU in the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, indicating that the industry still believes the raw but athletic defensive end will sign with Texas. Or that the LSU insiders simply haven't had time to made their prognostications public.

So the coaching staff has managed to avoid a worst-case scenario losing Bonney and Joe, it appears, while increasing the chances of landing a pure offensive tackle in the class and satisfying a major need there. Assuming that Sione Teuhema and his younger brother avoid the temptation of flipping to LSU, the weekend looks like it has a chance to be an unqualified success if Rodriguez joins the class on Monday night.
