For years, the Texas Longhorns have declined to hold camps or recruiting events to bridge the time period between the traditional summer camps in early June and the start of fall practice
All that is changing Friday with the first Under The Lights camp, an important recruiting event for head coach Charlie Strong and his staff at a time when the Horns are looking to establish some recruiting momentum after gaining only one commitment in the last two months since Albuquerque (N.M.) Eldorado quarterback Zach Gentry pledged back in the middle of May.
With many of the top prospects opting to skip the summer camps in June, the Friday camp will represent the first time the coaching staff will be able to work with many of the recruits in attendance. Not only that, but performances from 2016 prospects in particular could result in several offers going out.
Oh yeah, and the camp is happening at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium instead of on the practice fields and in the Bubble, where the June camps are held.
Unfortunately, some of the star power is gone from the event with the news that Mesquite Poteet linebacker Malik Jefferson won't be in attendance because his brother's brithday is this weekend.
Still, there will be plenty of star power on campus. Here's an incomplete list (which, as always, is subject to change as ride fall through, etc.):
