The agreement is non-binding for Ehlinger, but the consensus four-star prospect and nation’s No. 4 dual-threat quarterback, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, remained steady with his pledge through the recent coaching change.

“It’s definitely difficult with a coaching change. Guys are kind of skeptical if I’m going to like this guy, but I think in the long run they’re going to see the positive effects of the coaching change and really want to come to the University of Texas,” he said.

An early enrollee, Ehlinger will kick off his college career in January and will be on schedule to make his unofficial Longhorn debut during the Spring Game. While many expect Ehlinger will serve as the backup to Shane Buechele, who broke numerous true freshman school records, Ehlinger told Burnt Orange Nation he's ready and excited about competing against Buechele in the coming weeks.

During his career at Westlake, Ehlinger passed for 5,721 yards and 69 touchdowns in 26 games, while rushing for another 1,749 yards and 28 scores.

Ehlinger played only five games as a senior due to various injuries, which prevented him from following up a monster junior season in which he exploded for 5,193 total yards and 70 total touchdowns.

The local product ranks as the nation's No. 105 prospect and the No. 16 player in Texas.
