5-star Texas CB target Chris Steele sets commitment date

Texas now has until early July to convince Chris Steele that the Longhorns should be the pick when he announces his commitment.

Elite Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco cornerback Chris Steele has a commitment date in mind.

On Saturday, the five-star product out of California announced that he will be making his commitment on June 7.

Steele was originally aiming to announce his commitment on Under Armour All-America game prior to moving that decision date up, and interestingly enough, Steele announced his new commitment date during a weekend official visit to Oklahoma, although it’s unclear if there’s any connection between the trip to Norman and the new date.

Next weekend, Steele will officially visit LSU, and although he’s yet to visit Texas, Steele is aiming to unofficially visit the Forty Acres after that. The Longhorns are expected to receive one of Steele’s official visits, as well.

Steele does have a great relationship with the staff and recently insisted to 247Sports’ EJ Holland that the Longhorns are firmly in the mix. However, with USC pegged as the favorite and others such as Oklahoma and South Carolina looming as major threats, Texas will need to assure Steele makes the trek to Austin in the near future, especially for an official visit — a chore that isn't quite as daunting considering Steele plays 7-on-7 with FAST Houston.

Along with Texas, USC, Oklahoma, LSU and South Carolina, Steele is also still considering Alabama, Florida, Texas A&M and Miami, among others.

A 6’1, 188-pound prospect, Steele is ranked as the nation’s No. 27 player and the No. 3 cornerback in the country, per the 247Sports Composite.
