Key Texas S target Chris Thompson Jr. set to decide on Sunday

The nation’s No. 18 safety will bring his recruitment to a close on Sunday afternooon.

SB Nation: Joe Hamilton

In the coming hours, Duncanville safety Chris Thompson Jr. will be committed to the program of his choosing, as the four-star talent will be making his decision this coming Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CST.

Thompson initially planned to commit last Thursday at noon before postponing his decision by for a few days.

Of the several safety targets on Texas’ big board, Chris Thompson Jr. has long been considered the most likely to land in Austin, and that’s now likely even more true with his teammate, four-star quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson, committed to the program. As was the case with Jackson, Longhorns assistant receivers coach Ra’Shaad Samples’ presence and ties to Duncanville helped the Horns here. Samples, of course, did recently depart for a full-time role with SMU, but all appears to be status quo between Thompson and Texas.

“It’s possible,” Thompson told BON’s Joe Hamilton of joining Jackson as members of Texas’ 2020 class. “I’m pretty open, but I’m just trying to find the school that is the best fit for me.”

After numerous trips throughout the 2018 calendar year, Thompson made the short trek to Austin to take in a spring practice earlier this offseason, and he’s since returned for an official visit on May 3. More recently, he’s officially visited Ohio State, Notre Dame, and USC, and Auburn is a factor, as well. However, aside from proximity to home, Texas holds one distinct edge in the fact that the Horns have been in the mix from the beginning, as BON’s Wescott Eberts noted.

“Texas had a head start of three months on Ohio State, 12 and a half months on USC, and 13 and a half months on Auburn. The hope for the Longhorns coaching staff is that the extra time they’ve had to build a relationship with Thompson will win out over the programs to enter Thompson’s recruitment more recently.”

With his decision set to take place, Thompson’s Crystal Ball is entirely in favor of Texas, with 10 picks placed to date.
